The Plot:

The Good:

The film celebrates African-American culture, but doesn't highlight the differences.  It is a great mix of both comedy and drama, while making light of some of the stereotypes that have been so misunderstood.  The white wedding planner, played by Julie Bowen, for example, brings some lighthearted humor in trying to understand some of the cultural differences.  It is also interesting to see two very different African-American families butting heads about tradition and what is necessary at a wedding.

It's the battle of the divas.  Both Angela Basset and Loretta Devine give each other a run for each others money when it comes to who can play the bigger diva.  I won't even attempt to choose a winner among these two, but let's just say, it's pretty close. 

Devine does an amazing job playing a manipulative, money-snob who will do anything to protect her son, cheap long evening dresses even if that means ruining his wedding.  Basset has the rich-woman snob down to a tee and her refined look and elegant glamor make her even more believable in the role.

The dialogue is tight and the film flows perfectly from beginning to end.  There are no cliched lines or uncomfortable moments, it's simply enjoyable watching these two very different types of people intermingle and misunderstand each other.  Director Samil Akil does an amazing job finding the chemistry and highlighting that between his characters.

The Bad:
